ABOUT GRASSFIELD WRESTLING

Our program promotes advanced year round training and mentoring to build champions on and off the mat through the worlds oldest and greatest sport. We are a first-class wrestling program in the Chesapeake area, with a deep and experienced coaching staff. Our goals are to be the best high school wrestling program in the state of Virginia, win championships and do it the right way.

Contact Coach Shuler for High School practice times and locations. We train and compete year round. Training includes camps, cross-training in other sports, weight lifting, folkstyle wrestling and freestyle/greco wrestling. Come train with the best! 8-12th Grade Wrestlers.
This program is for beginners and experienced elementary/middle school wrestlers. Our intention with this program is to develop a pipeline of young future Champions for Grassfield Wrestling. Our Coaches will instill the basics and fundamentals of wrestling. We also teach them the core values, mentality and style of wrestling that has made our High School program one of the best teams in Hampton Roads and in the State of Virginia. Private Lessons
Grassfield Coach Taylor Misuna will be offering private wrestling lessons for all 8-12th grade wrestlers. Interested Parents/Wrestlers can contact him for details and cost/rates. Misuna was a 4x State Placer, 3x Finalist, 1x Champ and a 2x D2 All-American in College. Take advantage of this opportunity!
COACHING STAFF

We have 9 coaches on staff. Three of those individuals have more than a decade of coaching experience at the high school level. Overall, we have a combined 60 years of experience on our staff. In addition, 6 of our coaches wrestled at the college level and all of our staff were highly successful high school wrestlers. Our coaches are committed to wrestling and training with the kids year round.
HEAD COACH
Dr. Patrick Shuler
Coach Shuler has been Head Wrestling Coach at Grassfield High School since 2019. He took over for long time Coach Jesse Pearce, who had built a top level program over the past decade. Shuler has been coaching High School Wrestling since 2007, including formerly leading successful programs at Martinsville High School and Landstown High School in Virginia Beach. He has also been a Freestyle Coach for the Virginia National Team and the Hammer Chicks, a Virginia based Girls Wrestling Club. During his High School career he was a 2x VA State Champion at Brookville High School, 2x Freestyle National Team member, and the 2001 recipient of the Dave Schultz Excellence Award for the state of Virginia. He went on to wrestle Division I at the University of Wyoming for Hall of Fame Coach Stephen Suder, where he was a starter at 149lbs from 2002-2005. Shuler is Copper and Bronze Certified through USA Wrestling and specializes in Freestyle. He works as an affiliate for Athletes in Action sports ministry and has participated as a coach and athlete on multiple international freestyle teams in Russia, Ukraine, Siberia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Before transitioning careers, Shuler was a teacher and has completed graduate degrees in Leadership from Virginia Tech (Masters) and University of Lynchburg (Doctorate). Currently, he works in healthcare leadership.
HEAD ASSISTANT COACH
Chris Buckner
Coach Buckner has been coaching at Grassfield High School since the school opened in 2006. Buckner has helped build a very successful program at Grassfield producing multiple state champions and high level teams over the years. He also specializes in strength and conditioning aspects of our training. During his wrestling career he was an All-State VA wrestler at Deep Creek High School, wrestled Division I at Old Dominion University, and fought MMA for several years. Currently, he is a Fire Fighter for the City of Virginia Beach.
ASSISTANT COACH
Jeff Driscoll
Coach Driscoll has been coaching at Grassfield High School since 2018. He works with the Junior Varsity team as well as helping with Varsity. Driscoll was a successful High School wrestler for Grassfield before wrestling Division III at The Apprentice School. Currently, he is a Machinist at the Shipyard in Newport News.

Riley Starcher
Riley graduated from Grassfield High School in 2019 and was a stand out wrestler for the Grizzlies. He finished his career as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in school history. Riley was a 2x VA State Champion and a four time placer. He will be helping out as a drill partner and wrestling live with the light weight wrestlers.
ASSISTANT COACH
Mason Hoagland
Coach Hoagland has been coaching at Grassfield High School since 2019. He will be helping out as a drill partner and wrestling live with the middle weights during the year. Mason was an All-State Wrestler at Knob Noster High School in Missouri and also wrestled for several years at Missouri Valley College.

Trevor Burns
Trevor graduated from Grassfield High School in 2019 and was a stand out wrestler for the Grizzlies. He finished his career as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in school history. Trevor was a 2x NHSCA National Placer, 2x VA State Champion and a four time state placer. He wrestled Division 1 at U. of Tennessee Chattanooga and George Mason. He will be helping out as a drill partner and wrestling live with the heavy weight wrestlers.
ASSISTANT COACH
Taylor MisunaÂ
Misuna joined our coaching staff in 2022. He was one of the best wrestlers in program history at Grassfield HS. He was a state champion, 3x finalist and 4x state placer during his decorated career for the Grizzlies. He went on to wrestle D2 for @notre_dame_wrestling. Taylor was an All-American in 2019 placing seventh place in the National Championship at 149 lbs. Before losing his season to COVID in 2019-2020, Misuna was ranked No. 6 in the country and had qualified for the NCAA tournament poised to make a title run. He will be helping work with our advanced wrestlers as a drill partner as well as live and technique.

Garrett ForrestÂ
Garrett graduated from Grassfield high school in 2020. Garrett was the team captain of his senior year as well as the winner of the sportsmanship award. He will be helping out as a drill partner and wrestling live with mid-weight wrestlers

Cam Anderson
Anderson joined our coaching staff in 2022. He was one of the original state champions at Grassfield HS. He will be helping work with our advanced wrestlers as a drill partner as well as live and technique.
